ChemCentre welcomes Minister for Science

ChemCentre welcomes Minister for Science

Date Published: 05-May-17

Science Minister Dave Kelly visited ChemCentre yesterday, and saw firsthand how its specialist expertise helps keep Western Australia safe.
The Minister enjoyed a tour of the facility, and heard how ChemCentre has played a crucial role in providing independent expert advice to the state government on the water quality issues at the Perth Children’s Hospital construction site. Its report identified the dezincification of brass fittings as a source of lead, and recommended the orthophosphate treatment now being undertaken to solve the problem.

ChemCentre’s Emergency Response (ER) team brings chemistry outside the laboratory, with its 24/7 mobile laboratory allowing analysis of chemical hazards on site for incidents such as white powder alerts and mystery liquid spills. During emergency incidents, ChemCentre works closely with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), Department of Environment Regulation, and other agencies to ensure the safety of emergency responders and the community. During yesterday’s visit, we welcomed colleagues Ken Hall and David Gill from the DFES, demonstrating the strong inter-agency relationship that underpins our emergency response service.

ChemCentre’s forensic chemistry and toxicology teams assist WA Police, the Office of the State Coroner, and Racing and Wagering WA with analysis of illicit drugs, trace evidence, clandestine laboratories and blood and other tissue samples. The Minister heard about ChemCentre’s proteomics research under way in the forensic science laboratory, in conjunction with Edith Cowan University, and had an opportunity to discuss the project with ChemCentre Chemist Dr Nicola Beckett.

The commitment and expertise of ChemCentre’s staff was clear to see during the visit, demonstrating to WA communities that a world-class chemistry facility is working on their behalf, and for the benefit of its clients.
